Before he and other UDD leaders went to the police, Jatuporn Phromphan told the protesters at Rajprasong about the decision to turn themselves in at the nearby National Police Office in order to prevent further loss of life.  Some protesters screamed at the announcement.

He begged the protesters to listen, saying he and the other leaders were not betraying them, but could not bear the loss of life.

Many protesters wept.

Natthawut Saikua, another UDD leader, tried to calm down the protesters, saying that they needed to stop the killings and they would come back to fight again.  The protesters screamed in disapproval.

‘I know that you don’t want to hear this, but we have discussed and assessed the situation thoroughly.  We cannot withstand this brutality any longer.  (The crowd booed.)  Please listen to me.  Although we have not led you to the victory we want, we have tried our best.  (Uproar)  We’re going to trade our freedom for your safety,’ Natthawut said.

He begged the crowd repeatedly to listen to him.

While they were addressing the crowd, plumes of smoke rose and there were the sound of an explosion.

The UDD leaders then went to National Police Office under the protection of police and UDD security guards.

After they turned themselves in, some angry protesters smashed glass windows in the Gaysorn Plaza.  A fire broke out in front of the Central World.  There was the intermittent sound of explosions.  Many fled for cover inside the Police Hospital.
