InSIGHT OUT!  trains children and teenagers in conflict and disaster settings to express themselves through photographs and stories to promote healing from trauma and to empower their voices in their communities.

ABOUT InSIGHT OUT!

The InSIGHT OUT! project was started by a group of professional photojournalists who covered the 2004 Asian tsunami disaster who wanted to give young people a chance to document their own feelings and communities.

For 10 years, InSIGHT OUT! has trained 834 children in Phang Nga and Koh Panyee Thailand. Banda Aceh, Indonesia, conflict affected provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat in Thailand’s southern border with Malaysia, and with migrant and marginalized youth in New York City, San Francisco and Jersey City.

InSIGHT OUT! Photo Storytelling Workshop in Maijaiyang, Kachin State

InSIGHT OUT! held a workshop in Maiyaiyang with 34 children and teenagers displaced by the war in Kachin state from 4-11 July in partnership with the local NGOs, Wunpawng Ninghtoi and Bridge.

For the past two years, these youth from villages in northern Shan State and Kachin State directly affected by conflict have been living in the Unlung IDP Boarding School for 508 displaced students.

Trainers teach basic photo skills and send the children out to document their daily lives and the refugee camps.

They took photos in the boarding school where they live, Maijaiyang High School where they study and at the Paka Htawng IDP camp where 3,500 refugees are living in crowded conditions.

Each day, the students are given prints of photos they took to put into a personal journal where they write a caption, story or poem. Their images and words reflect their loneliness from being far from their villages, their response to the war and their dreams for education, peace and a future.

I want to tell you a story -- TU MAI, 14 –years-old, Boy

Deep in the woods lived a mother and her seven children. One day, before going to gather fire wood in the forest, the mother told her children: “Close the door and stay inside the house. When I come back I’ll show you my white hands. Only if you see white, you can open the door.” Then she left for the woods. Soon after, a monster came and called out to the children “I am your mother, please open the door.” The children replied “Show us your hands!”. They saw hairy hands pressed on the window.  One of the children said “My mother’s hand does not have hairs”. The monster shaved off his hairy hands and showed the children again. But the hand was black. Then the monster peeled off its skin to make his hands white and showed them again. So they opened the door. As a lesson, all the children were killed and eaten by the monster.

ZETAW ZAWN DAU 15-years-old, boy

The Burmese Army entered our village just when farming was at its best in our village. The plants were growing tall and the pigs were getting bigger. I remember that we had to sell all our pigs before they were fully grown because we had to flee. We had just started raising pigs that year, but we had to leave them all behind. After this war is over, I hope I can raise pigs again.

I am interested in learning about agriculture and animal husbandry.

Zetaw Zawn Dau,

FRIENDS –A POEM BY ZETAW ZAWN DAU, 15-years-old, Boy

We must have a friend.
We gotta have at least one!
It’s so hard to live on,
Without even one friend.
But right now I’ve got none,
It’s just so hard to deal with it.
Being weak till midnight.
Always missing friends,
Me..myself… feeling so alone.
Where are you my friend?
I really want to see you.

Maran Dim Awng Yaw Age 13-years-old, Boy

It already been 3 years that we have been staying at this camp, that we left our belongings, and that we left our animals crying. And we are still missing our home and villages. It is the responsibility of everyone to fight for our freedom, even the animals.

Maran Dim Awng Yaw,

Maran Dim Awng Yaw Age 13-years-old, Boy

I really hate of being so and being like this, living in camps, just because our land is full of natural resources, full of flowers in mountains and valley, and Burmese want it.

Maran Dim Awng Yaw,

Dim Awng Yaw Maran Age 13-years-old, Boy

There are so many natural resources in our Kachin land. We are living happily in here. Unfortunately Devil army came in it, many terrible bad things happened. So let’s chase them away, all Kachin people!!!

Maran Dim Awng Yaw,

Maran Doi San, 14-years-old, Boy

I feel very sorry when I see such (healthy) corn plants, because I miss my parents at home. I missed my old days that I and my parents planted corn together, and looked at the corn growing. I can’t help myself wanting to go back to home when I see such things. And I really miss eating corn from my home garden.

Ji Pan Dumdaw, 15-years-old, Girl

These children are living poorly in the camp. They often miss their home, but because of the war, they can’t go home. Sometimes they look happy. Maybe because they are still children.

Maran Ji Ra, 16-years-old, Girl

The reason why I took this photo is that I would like to show my thanks to all you teachers who taught us so much about camera work and gave us a chance to express things about ourselves. I would also like to show the world stories about us.

Maran Ji Ra, 16-years-old, Girl

This photo was taken in Maijayang High school. There are so many students this year, because of IDP students. It’s very pitiful to be IDPs like us. I feel much more pity to children and old people among the IDPs. When I think about it sometimes, I feel very sad.
