Police commander offers to pay lèse majesté offenders to leave Thailand

Thailand's police commander says he is willing to cover the flight costs for lèse majesté suspects to leave Thailand, adding he is happy to go into debt for the country.

On 26 October 2016, Gen Pol Chakthip Chaijinda, Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police, said that the police are doing their best to prosecute people accused of lèse majesté both inside and outside the country. He also offered to pay for air tickets for lèse majesté offenders to leave Thailand if they do not have enough money, reported Khaosod Online.

“I don’t know why lèse majesté people express themselves like that. If you don’t want to live in Thailand, then leave. Move abroad. If you don’t have enough money for air tickets, come to me. I’ll give it to you. I’m willing to go into debt for the country from paying these people to leave the country,” Khaosod quoted Chakthip as saying.

The police commander said this in a meeting at the Office of Royal Thai Police. The meeting mainly discussed the arrangements around the Grand Palace where the funeral rites for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej are taking place.

Chakthip said the police are ready to assist Thais who want to pay respect to the late King and will prevent criminals from taking advantage during the ceremony.
