In a rare case in Thailand's deep south, Pattani Provincial Court is proceeding with an in camera lèse majesté trial against a Malayu Muslim man, who is accused of putting up banners about the country's conflict  with a picture of  Her Majesty the Queen in 2009.

Since 21 February 2012, ten prominent Thai NGO/ labour union/ human rights activists have been on trial at the Criminal Court, Rachadapisek Road, Bangkok on serious criminal charges relating to national security, public peace, and trespass with use of force arising from a mass sit-in staged in the lobby in front of the meeting chamber of the National Legislative Assembly on 12 December 2007. If found guilty of all charges, they could face prison sentences of up to 7 years.

Somyot Prueksakasemsuk’s request for bail was dismissed by the Appeals Court on 25 Jan, said his wife Sukanya after she went to the Criminal Court on 4 Feb. The bail request was submitted to the court immediately after the verdict was delivered on 23 Jan, she said.

The Criminal Court yesterday sentenced a prominent labour activist and magazine editor Somyot Prueksakasemsuk to 10 years' imprisonment for publishing two articles deemed to violate the lèse majesté law, amidst international concerns about freedom of expression in Thailand.
